MANILA - President Benigno Aquino III and Senate President Franklin Drilon today inaugurated the newly built P730 million Iloilo Convention Center (ICC) that is seen to boost tourism and employment in the province.
Located within the Iloilo Business Park in Mandurriao district, the convention center is seen as Iloilo's ticket to being the prime convention and events destination in the whole Western Visayas' region.
The two-storey ICC is designed to host local and international conferences and exhibitions. It can accomodate more than 3,000 people. The ground floor plenary hall can be divided into four halls. On the second floor are seven function rooms, a museum and a VIP room.
The ICC will be the venue for three major Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ministerial meetings, which will be attended by officials from various countries from September 21 to October 6.
It is built on a 1.7-hectare land donated to the Department of Tourism. It has a unique architectural design made by Ilonggo architect William Coscolluela and inspired by the Paraw, a double outrigger sailboat native to the Visayan Region.
The ICC became controversial after it became the subject of a graft complaint against Drilon for alleged overpricing. The case was eventually dismissed by the Office of the Ombudsman for lack of evidence.
