DAVAO CITY -- Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday clarified his health condition, denying rumors that he is suffering from cancer.

In an interview on "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa," Duterte belied rumors that he is suffering from throat cancer. However, he admitted that he is suffering from other health problems involving his blood vessels, spine and esophagus.

"I said I have Buerger's... constriction of blood vessels because of nicotine... That's why I gave orders to stop smoking," he said, adding that he is also suffering from a condition in his spine due to a bike accident.

"I have Barrett's (esophagus). I'm nearing Stage 1, nearing lang... Then sinabi ng doctor ko kung hindi ako maghinto mag-inom, ma-stage 4 ka na... Well I want to drink because I love brandy," Duterte added.

He also stressed that his health was not a factor in his decision not to join the elections in 2016.

Duterte last week announced that he will not run for president in 2016, and is also planning to retire from politics. -- report from Vina Araneta, ABS-CBN News Southern Mindanao
