MANILA, Philippines - A member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed in an encounter with government troops on Sunday night in Barangay Pakili, Bula, Camarines Sur.

Members of the 42nd Infantry Batallion, headed by Lt. Col. Ernesto Cruz, were responding to calls from residents that members of the NPA have been extorting money from them.

The clash lasted about 10 minutes before the rebel group pulled back. The government troops found a rebel dead, still clutching his M16 rifle.

However, a troop member was also wounded in the clash. Private 1st Class Marciano Falguera, who obtained a gunshot wound to the stomach, is now in the Camp Elias Angeles hospital.

Ninth Infantry Division commander General Ruperto Pabustan has already ordered a hunt for the other members of the NPA group.

He also expressed his gratitude to the residents who have been helping the military in its fight against insurgency. - report from Jonathan Magi, ABS-CBN News Naga
