MANILA, Philippines – A collision between 2 ships off Sarangani Bay has resulted into a 3-hectare oil spill that may damage a marine reserve in the area.

Bulk Carrier 1 and MV HS Puccini collided in the vicinity of Barangay Lumatil in Maasim on Tuesday night.

Bulk Carrier 1 sank after the collision.

Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao advised residents living near the sea to keep calm.

In a statement, Pacquiao said: "Huwag tayong mag-panic, kung hindi isulong natin ang bayanihan para mawala na ang oil spill."

The Philippine Coast Guard said oil spill booms will be installed to help contain the oil spill.

The coral reefs in the area were destroyed in May when another ship, MV Double Prosperity, rammed into the reefs.

Chief Engineer Juanito Minoy and apprentice Engr. Edward Paler, who were killed in the collision, are crewmembers of the sunken ship, Bulk Carrier 1.

The other 21 crewmembers of Bulk Carrier 1 were rescued by the Coast Guard. -- Report from Jay Dayupay, ABS-CBN SOKSARGEN
