MANILA - Albay Governor Joey Salceda suspended classes in some parts of Rapu-Rapu town due to ongoing bushfires.

In his official Facebook account, Salceda said he has ordered the suspension of classes in the affected barangays of Poblacion, Morocborocan, Mananao, Guadalupe, and Buenavista.

Classes in barangays Batan, San Ramon, Bagaobawan, Dapdap, and Bogtong are also suspended as these villages are currently hosting the affected residents.

Albay officials said about 5,000 residents were affected by the bushfires which started Thursday. An estimated 6,000 hectares of forest land have been razed.

Officials said kaingin (slash-and-burn) farming likely caused the bushfires.
