PAMPANGA, Philippines – (UPDATE) A Filipino pilot and his Malaysian student were killed in a plane crash in Magalang town, Pampanga province on Friday afternoon, police said.

The victims were on board a private Cessna light aircraft when it crashed in Sitio Talimundok, Barangay Sta. Monica at around 5:30 p.m.

The aircraft malfunctioned while it was in the air, according to a report from Captain Benhur Gomez, president of the Omi Aviation Corp. Flying School in Clark Field.

Gomez said the victims, identified as Alfred Christian de Leon and Tian Yu Wong, died on the spot.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, the plane was in good condition when it departed from Omni Aviation Flying School at Clark Air Base around 4 p.m.

Initial investigations showed that de Leon, and not the student pilot, was the one maneuvering the plane.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the aircraft’s malfunction. -- Reports from Gracie Rutao and Trisha Mostoles, ABS-CBN News Pampanga
