MANILA, Philippines – A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck off Borongan City in Eastern Samar province, before dawn Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
The Phivolcs said the quake struck 24 kilometers northwest of Borongan City at 5:50 a.m..
It said that the quake was shallow and was tectonic in origin.
The tremor was felt at Intensity 4 in Borongan City and Sulat town; Intensity 3 in the towns of Taft, Can-Avid and Lorrente and Catbalogan City; and Intensity 2 in Tacloban, Calbayog, and Gen. MacArthur and Mercedes.
Another earthquake, also shallow and tectonic in origin, struck 133 kilometers northeast of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte at 9:15 a.m..
Intensity 2 was felt in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte.
