ILOILO, Philippines – Iloilo City Rep. Jerry Treñas and Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog are facing malversation of public funds charges in complaints filed before the Office of the Ombudsman.

The complaints were filed by Iloilo Press Club president and businessman Rommel Ynion.

He based his complaints on a report by the Commission on Audit (COA) for fiscal year 2010.

According to the COA report, Treñas and Mabilog bought funeral wreaths 124 times using the city’s P4.09 million representation expense allocation.

Mabilog also allegedly used the representation expense allocation to buy more than 30 cakes during the Christmas season.

The purchases were made illegally, according to COA circular number 2004-008.

Ynion is requesting for the preventive suspension of both officials.

The Ombudsman will conduct a fact-finding investigation on the issue.

Meanwhile, Mabilog expressed confidence that the Ynion’s complaint will not prosper, saying that all the transactions were made legally.

Mabilog and the city’s legal office are also preparing to file a complaint against Ynion in connection with an illegal construction of a hotel under the businessman's name. -- Reports from Nony Basco and Jennifer Garcia, ABS-CBN Iloilo
