The local government of Calapan City in Oriental Mindoro on Friday ordered a 9-day suspension of classes in an elementary school after 132 of its pupils were downed by flu.

A radio dzMM report said that Calapan City Mayor Salvador Leachon ordered the Managpi Elementary School closed until July 26.

The report said five of the 132 pupils, who were randomly checked for flu, turned out positive for influenza A(H1N1) virus. Some of the students have ordinary flu, the report added.

It was not clear how many students are actually infected with the new influenza virus.

All sick students have been asked to go on self-quarantine. The local government has given students Oseltamivir or Tamiflu. With a report from Arnell Ozaeta, ABS-CBN Southern Tagalog
