MANILA, Philippines - One person was killed while Pualas Vice-Mayor Dianaton Lanto Tanog was wounded in an ambush attempt in Mandalum, Lanao del Sur Sunday afternoon.
Senior Superintendent Paniares Adap, Lanao del Sur police provincial director, said Tanog was traversing Barangay Dandamun, Madalum  after attending a mass oath-taking ceremony at the Lanao del Sur capitol when unidentified gunmen strafed his vehicle using assorted high powered firearms.

One of the vehicle's passengers, 30-year-old Abolkhair Arpa Benasing, was killed after being shot in the head.

The vice-mayor sustained slight injuries to the body. His wife, Farina, was shot in the right thigh while Tanog's cousins, Normida Tanog Benasing and Ronto Tanog, were slightly injured.

The wounded were treated in Amai Pakpak Medical Center and were transferred to a hospital in Iligan City.

The police said political rivalry might be the motive behind the ambush attempt.
Joint police and military troops are now conducting hot pursuit operations to locate the whereabouts of the suspects.
