MANILA, Philippines - An unidentified assailant murdered a provincial coordinator of the leftist Bayan Muna party-list group in Aklan Monday, marking the first extrajudicial killing of an activist under the Aquino administration.

In a statement, Bayan Muna Rep. Teodoro Casiño said councilor Fernando Baldomero of Lezo, Aklan was shot in front of his house while preparing to bring his child to school  at 7 a.m.

"We demand an immediate and thorough investigation particularly on the involvement of military and military-backed death squads. Baldomero was Bayan Muna provincial coordinator for Aklan. He is the first victim of extrajudicial killing under the Aquino government," Casiño said.

Rights groups earlier urged President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to stop extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances allegedly committed by the military during the nine-year rule of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Records of human rights group Karapatan showed there were 1,206 victims of extrajudicial killings, 205 victims of enforced disappearance, hundreds illegally arrested and detained and more than a thousand victims of torture from 2001-2010.
