Suspected NPA rebels shoot dead Air Force man, 2 others hurt

BATANGAS, Philippines -- A member of the Philippine Air Force was shot dead while 2 of his companions were wounded in an ambush by suspected New People's Army (NPA) in Calaca town Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Senior Superintendent Alberto Supapo, Batangas police director, identified the fatality as Sergeant Darwin De Roxas, 27, resident of Sta Maria in Laguna province.

Wounded were Airman 2nd Class Aeron Manalo, 24, of Lian, Batangas and Airman 1st Class Rommel Tiosin, 29, of Narra, Palawan.

The victims were all assigned at 731st Combat Group based in Barangay Coral Ni Lopez in Calaca.

According to a report, the victims were heading towards the Calaca Public Market onboard a motorcycle to buy their weekly food supply, when they were attacked by suspected rebels in Sitio Magahis in Barangay Calantas around 1 p.m..

De Roxas was killed on the spot while the 2 others suffered multiple gunshot wounds. They were brought to Madonna Medical Center at Balayan, Batangas for treatment.

Investigators recovered from the crime scene 16 pieces of spent caliber 45 caliber shells.

A special police investigation team was created to probe the incident.
