MANILA - A top commander of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) was killed in a firefight with government troops in Al-Barka, Basilan on Saturday morning, the military said.

Col. Carlito Galvez, commander of the 104th Infantry Brigade, said BIFF commander Basir Kasaran was killed after being shot in the head by a sniper.

The military said Kasaran is the highest commander of the BIFF in Basilan. The groups of Nurhassan Jamiri and Musana Jamiri, which have about 30 to 40 members, are believed to be under him.

Kasaran also provides mortars as well as safe haven to Abu Sayyaf Group's Furuji Indama and Isnilon Hapilon in his area in Al-Barka, it added. -- Report from ABS-CBN News Regional Network Group
