3 rebels die in Batangas encounter

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED)- Three suspected New People's Army (NPA) guerillas were killed in an encounter in Taysan town, Batangas province, before dawn Thursday.

The Philippine Army's 2nd Division said troops from the Philippine Air Force's 740th Combat Group encountered at least 20 Communist rebels in Sitio Tagusan, Barangay Mabayabas around 4:45 a.m..

It said that 3 rebels were killed and 3 more, one of them wounded, were arrested during the clash.

Air force commander Lt. Col. Arnel Villareal said among those killed was the NPA group's leader identified as Ka Dandan.

The report added that air force man was wounded in the clash. He was brought to the Fernando Airbase Hospital in Lipa City along with the wounded rebel.

Recovered from the encounter site were 5 M-16 rifles, an M203 grenade launcher, 2 rifle grenades, and a handheld radio. -- Reports from Noel Alamar, radio dzMM and Arnell Ozaeta, ABS-CBN Southern Tagalog
