GENERAL SANTOS CITY - The daughter of a vendor topped this year's Islamic Studies graduates at the Mindanao State University in General Santos City.
Asmin Abdullah graduated magna cum laude from the university's Islamic Studies program. She is only the second to earn such distinction from the university's Islamic Studies program.
According to Abdullah, studying Islamic Studies was not easy for her.
"Naramdaman ko kasi 'yung discrimination pagpasok ko dito sa university. 'Yun bang masyadong low level 'yung tingin nila sa Islamic Studies. Mahirap din po siya na course kasi we are studying Islamic history, economics, politics and all others," she said.
Abdullah's mother, Salma, is proud of her daughter. She supported her daughter's studies as a market vendor in Glan, Sarangani.
A single parent, Salma worked hard to support her family.
"Masayang-masaya ako kasi kahit ako lang mag-isa, napag-aral ko sila. Proud talaga ako kahit wala na silang ama," she said.
Abdullah hopes that there will come a time when people will not discriminate against Muslims.
"Sana mawala na po 'yung discrimination. Mahirap po maging Muslim, mahirap po maging Moro," she said.
