Tan beats Misuari as Sulu governor again

MANILA, Philippines – Incumbent Gov. Abdusakur Tan has been re-elected in Sulu, one of the country's election violence hotspots according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Tan (Lakas-Kampi-CMD) won by a landslide against 6 opponents, including Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) Chairman Nur Misuari.

Tan defeated Misuari, a former governor of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, and former governor Benjamin Loong in 2007.

Meanwhile, Vice-governor Lady Ann Sahidula won as congresswoman of Sulu’s 2nd District while Habib Tupay Loong won as congressman of the province’s 1st District.

Sahidula was involved in the negotiations for the release of several hostages kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf Group in Sulu, among them ABS-CBN correspondent Ces Drilon and International Committee of the Red Cross worker Mary Jean Lacaba. – With reports from ANC.
