Supporters of Calamba bet protest delay canvassing
LAGUNA – Supporters of Calamba mayoral candidate Binoy Lajara stormed city hall to protest the suspension of the canvassing votes.
They believe the results of the elections are being manipulated.
“Ang mga tao nagpuntahan dito kahit sila’y ulanan at kahit sila’y magutom kasi gusto na nila mailuklok si Mayor Lajara,” said ABC President Saturnino Lajara.
The mayoral race in Calamba is neck and neck between Lajara and his rival Timmy Chipeco.
Chipeco denies that cheating is going on, adding he understands why there has been a delay in transmission.
“Alam niyo naman kasi na in every election, on part of the losing candidate there’s always an allegation of cheating, but we should prove it and not just allege it,” said Chipeco.
Police are keeping a close watch on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in Calamba.
Local poll officials explained that 88 precincts have not yet transmitted results due to various problems with precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines.
“Noong counting, doon nagkaroon ng problema. Mayroon kasing mga makina na pagdating sa kalahati, nagshu-shutdown na siya,” said Calamba election officer Evelyn Parayan.
Aside from Calamba, transmission problems are also being experienced in Sta. Rosa, Luisiana and San Pablo, where the camp of former ABS-CBN reporter Sol Aragones, who is running as third district representative, also fears the possibility of cheating.
The provincial Comelec officials have not yet proclaimed the winning governor and representatives in the first, second and third districts, but they are hoping to finish before Friday.
