MANILA - Unidentified men stole the official ballots from a polling center in Tipo-tipo, Basilan Monday.
Attorney Reynold Macarambon, acting provincial supervisor of the Commission on Elections in Basilan, said the suspects suddenly barged into the polling precinct and took the unshaded official ballots from the hands of the board of election inspectors.
Macarambon said the elections in that particular polling precinct did not push through as there are no contingency ballots prepared by Comelec.
He said the suspects cannot use the snatched ballots and feed it to other vote counting machines since every ballot is specially configured for a certain vote counting machine (VCM).
It will, however, have an effect on the final tally of the votes if candidates have close margin of leads.
Macarambon ordered the election officer of Tipo-tipo to submit a written report about the ballot snatching incident to be submitted to the main office of Comelec in Metro Manila.
The Comelec en banc will then decide if a special election is needed in Tipo-tipo town.
The Comelec office in Basilan also requested the police to investigate and establish the identities of the persons who snatched the ballots.
