MANILA, Philippines - House Speaker Feliciano "Sonny" Belmonte today confirmed that the House of Representatives is set to drop Dinagat Islands Rep. Ruben Ecleo from its rolls when sessions resume the week of May 9.
When asked if it would happen on May 9—the 1st day back at work after a long congressional break, Belmonte texted back: “Nope, but thereabouts.”
Belmonte did say that the basis will be the finality of Ecleo’s conviction by the anti-graft court Sandiganbayan over corruption charges from the time he was a town mayor in 2004. The penalties imposed included perpetual and absolute disqualification from public office.
Usually, House members are subjected to ethics proceedings before they are dropped from the rolls, unless they are convicted by final judgment.
Belmonte could not immediately say when they received the notice of the finality of the judgment on Ecleo.
