Alert level 2 remains hoisted over Taal volcano
BATANGAS, Philippines - Alert level 2 remained hoisted over Taal Volcano on Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.
Phivolcs regional director Louella Jurilla, in a travel advisory, said the volcano’s main crater, the Daang Kastila trail, and Mt. Tabaro are strictly off-limits due to sudden steam-driven explosions that may occur in the area.
The explosions may have toxic gases that can kill people, Jurilla warned.
“The entire volcano island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended,” she said.
Jurilla added that the situation is being monitored by the Department of Tourism in cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology, Phivolcs, and local government units.
She urged the public to visit Phivolcs’ website (www.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph) for more information on Taal volcano’s situation.
