MANILA, Philippines – The use of plastic bags in the province of Bulacan is now prohibited following the release of an ordinance by Bulacan Governor Wilhelmino Sy-Alvarado.

The ordinance states that using non-biodegradable plastic bags, styrofoam and other similar products used as packaging materials are now prohibited in the 21 towns and 3 cities of Bulacan.

Violators will be meted a P5,000 fine and 1-year imprisonment.

The Bulacan governor said the ban will be immediately implemented after the rules and regulations are issued.

He added that the ordinance will be enforced in the 569 barangays of Bulacan.

Two SM malls in the towns of Baliuag and Marilao have been implementing the "no plastic" policy and have banned the use of plastic bags.
