PANGASINAN, Philippines – A rescued dolphin discovered off the coast of Dasol Bay in Pangasinan died Sunday when a rescue team tried to push it back out to sea.

A fisherman in the mangroves of Dasol Bay apparently saw two bottlenose dolphins Sunday morning. One of the dolphins was badly injured.

The fisherman immediately alerted a rescue team to bring the dolphins back to shore to be diagnosed. While one was perfectly fit, the other dolphin was severely wounded.

"Posibleng pating ang may gawa niyan,” said Dr. Ronaldo Abarra, city veterinarian of Alaminos City, Pangasinan.

Around noon, the rescue team attempted to free the healthy dolphin. However, the dolphin became agitated and behaved as if it didn’t want to leave its wounded mate, eventually leading to its death. Reports said that the dolphin will be buried in a fish cemetery inside the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources research center in Dagupan City.

The wounded dolphin, on the other hand, will be sent to Ocean Adventure in Subic Bay, Olongapo City for medication. Report by Noriel Padiernos, ABS-CBN News
