ILOILO - At least 41 hectares of mountainside land were affected by a series of wildfires in the towns of Dingle and Leon in the province of Iloilo over the weekend.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is now planning to deploy forest guards in the mountains to monitor the possible occurrence of more fire incidents as temperatures rise in the province.
Some residents believe the wildfire is caused by massive kaingin (slash and burn) activity in the area.
The DENR said the warmer weather brought on by the El Niño phenomenon and cigarettes thrown in grassy areas are also factors that cause a wildfire.
The DENR advised the public to immediately notify the nearest fire station in case a fire occurs in their area.
