MANILA, Philippines – Six people were killed while an undetermined number were hurt following an attack by unidentified armed men in Lapuyan town in Zamboanga del Sur on Thursday afternoon, a military official said.

At least 10 gunmen led by a certain Amie Andi opened fire at the residents of Sitio Bihing, Barangay Tininghalang at around 4:30 p.m., according to Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang, spokesman of the military's Western Mindanao Command.

"Initial report disclosed that 6 were killed and undetermined number were wounded, including children," said Cabangbang.

Cabangbang said the armed men escaped northwest.

He added that the affected residents are relatives of a certain Tayabag, identified as a member of the 5th Infantry Battalion.

Tayabag reportedly assisted Lapuyan police in the arrest of Andi's brother, Samang, last February 11.

"The attacked residents are relatives of CAA (CAFGU Active Auxiliary) Tayabag who guided the Philippine National Police in getting Samang," said Cabangbang.

Cabangbang did not disclose the charges Samang is facing.

A report from ABS-CBN News Zamboanga said 7 persons were wounded in the incident and were rushed to Margosatubig Regional Hospital. -- With a report from Queenie Casimiro, ABS-CBN News Zamboanga
