3 killed, 15 hurt in Kidapawan jail attack

MANILA, Philippines – Three civilians died while 15 others were injured in a jail attack in Kidawapan City, North Cotabato Sunday night, police said.

North Cotabato police chief Senior Superintendet Cornelio Salinas said some 50 armed men raided the Kidapawan City Jail in an attempt to release their leader, identified as Datukan Samad alias “Lastikman”.

Samad, considered a high-risk inmate, was arrested last January in Cotabato City.

Salinas said the balaclava-wearing suspects launched 2 rocket-propelled grenades at the jail’s steel gate at around 10 p.m.

The suspects fled the scene after failing to open the gate and engaging in a 15-minute firefight with the jail guards.

During the police chase, the suspects strafed the houses on their way, killing 3 civilians, namely: Mark Anthony Morales, 23; Ian Carlo Sevilla, 22; and Benny Balmediano.

The suspects also left an improvised explosive device in the area, injuring 15 people including policemen, jail guards, civilians and firemen.

  • Dave Dapan
  • Rizaldo Dapan
  • Al Timojin
  • Joel Letada
  • 2 unidentified jail guards
