MANILA, Philippines – Eighteen establishments were razed due to a fire at the public market in San Rafael, Iloilo.
The fire started around 11 pm on Saturday at a mini-grocery store owned by Helen Balquin. It spread quickly as some parts of the public market were made of light materials.
The blaze lasted for two hours because San Rafael had no fire truck and fire fighters from nearby towns had to be called.
According to SFO1 Shiruld delos Santos, the fire was most likely caused by a short circuit.
“May nag-spark umano na kuryente. Siguro dun nanggaling ang apoy,” delos Santos said.
Among the establishments razed were a grocery store owned by Aileen Binyas and a meat shop owned by the family of Anilyn Caas.
“Tumulong kami para maapula ang apoy kaya wala kaming naisalbang gamit,” Caas said.
It was past 2 am when the fire was declared out.
According to the Bureau of Fire Protection, more than P8-million worthy of property was damaged. – Report from Jenel Baclay, ABS-CBN News Iloilo
