Soldier hurt in blast near Jolo church

MANILA, Philippines - A Marine corporal was hurt in a grenade blast near the Jolo Cathedral in Sulu province minutes before midnight struck on New Year's Eve.

Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner, Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesperson, a grenade was lobbed and exploded at the People's Commercial on Ariolas Street corner Boyon Street, Barangay Walled City in Jolo around 11:20 p.m. Thursday.

Brawner said Marine Corporal Dennis Hernandez was injured after he caught shrapnel at the back of his left thigh. The soldier has been brought to a military hospital's trauma center.

The injured soldier was part of a team assigned to secure the Jolo Cathedral, which was only 30 meters away from the blast site.

The military has been securing the cathedral since a similar attack by a local terrorist on the cathedral two months ago. With a report from Noel Alamar, radio dzMM
