MANILA (2nd UPDATE) – Former Pagadian Mayor Samuel Co and his wife have been arrested, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima confirmed.

The Co couple was arrested on Saturday afternoon following a surveillance operation of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

De Lima said Co and his wife were arrested at The Aston at Two Serendra in Bonifacio Global City. She said the NBI posed as prospective buyers of the condominium.

They were arrested when they were about to leave the place, she added.

The two are now under the custody of the NBI at its headquarters in Taft Avenue, Manila.

De Lima said she will not allow the presentation of the two at a press conference. The media can just take shots of the two while in detention, she said.

The NBI had been searching for Co after the Iligan regional trial court issued an arrest warrant in connection with his alleged involvement in the Aman Futures investment scam.

The former mayor is facing syndicated estafa charges.

The NBI, meantime, said Aman Futures founder Manuel Amalilio is still at large and government authorities are still searching for him in Malaysia. – from Ricky Velasco, dzMM
