MANILA, Philippines - ABS-CBN News on Monday saw the cleaning and repainting of the former library and media lounge of the Southern Police District (SPD).

It will be the temporary detention cell of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo if her health improves and once the court orders the SPD to take her into custody.

The bed has been changed, and new pillow cases, bed sheets, and blankets have been purchased.

The toilet was also cleaned, and a new aircon will be installed.

The room is about 3 meters by 6 meters and has its own sink and dining area.

"We just want to be ready just in case, mahirap na kaming mabulaga sakaling biglang magbago isip ang korte," said Chief Inspector Jenny Tecson, head of the SPD's public information office.

A Pasay Regional Trial Court judge earlier granted Arroyo's request to stay under hospital arrest temporarily while awaiting trial for electoral sabotage.

The SPD room may be far from what the former President is used to, but it is a lot better than an ordinary jail cell.

In other cells, several prisoners crowd in one room, using only one bathroom.

The SPD said Arroyo, being a former president, deserves to be given utmost respect.

However, in the end, it will still be the court that will decide where Arroyo will be detained. - ANC
