MMDA's 'kakanin' man gets a raise

MANILA – The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) traffic enforcer who earned the admiration of netizens for selling ''kakanin'' (rice cakes) to augment his income has been given a salary raise.

MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino said traffic enforcer Fernando Gonzales' daily income will be raised by P279. This means that from P15,000, Gonzales' monthly income will become P20,580.

In the pictures that have gone viral online, Gonzales is seen selling rice cakes to motorists along EDSA.

Gonzales earned praised for his honest way of augmenting his income instead of resorting to extortion.

Gonzales earlier said his P15,000 monthly income was not enough to put his children through school.

"Minsan pag humihingi sila, di ko alam kung saan sila kukuha kaya po nag-isip ako nang paraan. Sinabi po ni misis marunong siyang magluto ng kakanin," he said.

"Masama ang loob ko kapag isang bata nanghihingi, hindi ko alam kung saan ako kukuha. Sasabihin ko sa kanya mamaya na, utang muna tayo sa tindahan."
