MANILA – A passenger bus from Baclaran caught fire on the northbound lane of EDSA in Pasay City on Saturday morning.

The Valisno Express went up in flames in front of the Heritage Hotel past 6 a.m. The bus was bound for Tungko in San Jose Del Monte in Bulacan.

Driver Ronald Domingo said he heard a noise coming from the bus' engine and then the brakes failed to work. He maneuvered the bus near the hotel to prevent it from hitting other vehicles along EDSA.

He said he shouted for the passengers to alight from the bus after seeing the engine already on fire. Some passengers panicked and escaped through the bus' windows.

Domingo also sustained injuries for trying to put out the fire.

Arson investigator FO3 Ariel Lacasabdile of the Pasay Fire Department said they are looking at short circuit or overheated engine as the possible cause of the blaze.

The incident also caused minor traffic in the area. -- Report from Dennis Datu, dzMM
