MANILA (UPDATED 2) - The local government of Marikina has started forced evacuation of residents near the Marikina River after the river's water level continued to rise.

The Marikina public information office said the river is now under Alert Level 4 after the water level reached 18 meters as of 2:45pm.

"#marikinariver alarm is now sounding for 18m water level as of 2:45. FORCED EVACUATION," a tweet from the Marikina PIO said.

An ANC report said the evacuation could affect some 20,000 Marikina residents living near the river.

In Barangay Nangka, floods are now knee-high.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas said the evacuation will prioritize women, children and the elderly.

Metro Manila Development Authority chairman Francis Tolentino said he has ordered the opening of 8 floodgates at the Manggahan Floodway to lower the water level of Marikina River. He said the floodgates will ensure that the floodwaters will go straight to Laguna de Bay.
