MANILA, Philippines – The Manila Police District (MPD) on Tuesday formally filed abortion charges against a pregnant woman who cut open her belly last week.
Senior Inspector Joselito De Ocampo of MPD’s Homicide Section said the woman, whose identity is still being withheld, was charged with violation of Article 256 (Intentional Abortion) of the Revised Penal Code.
Her uncle and aunt who ordered garbage collectors to bury the baby's remains may also face charges, such as obstruction of justice and conspiracy.
An autopsy revealed that the dead baby was between 8 and 9 months old.
The woman, who cut open her belly using a kitchen knife and then sewed it with ordinary needle and thread, allegedly told police investigators that many people would get angry if her baby lived. – with a report from Noel Alamar, dzMM
