MANILA - Instead of destroying the Torre de Manila, why not make the Rizal Monument do an about-face?
Manila Rep. Amado Bagatsing said he will submit a proposal to pivot the Rizal Monument to make it face the city of Manila instead of Manila Bay.
He said Rizal facing Manila Bay actually adds fuel to claims that the Philippine hero is a traitor. He pointed out that even the statues of carabaos in Rizal Park are facing the city, and not the sea.
"I am proposing history be rectified if mali. Bansag kay Rizal traydor, nakatalikod. Hanggang ngayon nakatalikod pa," he said.
He also said changing the direction where Rizal is facing would also support historical claims that he faced the firing squad at Bagumbayan.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts said making the Rizal Monument do an about-face will not solve the problem of the construction of the "photo-bombing" Torre de Manila.
"Kung tatalikod yan, it does not address the incursion into the space. Pag hinarap natin si Rizal sa DMCI di naman yata katanggap-tanggap yun," said NCCA Legal Counsel, Atty. Trixie Angeles.
The Supreme Court earlier issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) to stop the construction and development of the Torre de Manila along Taft Avenue, Manila.
The Knights of Rizal opposed the project, alleging that it violates the constitutional provision on the conservation and promotion of the country's historical and cultural heritage and is an eye sore on the Dr. Jose Rizal national monument at the Luneta Park.
