QUEZON CITY, Philippines (UPDATED) - Residents of Happy Valley Apartments in New Manila, Quezon City, thought it was the end of the world when they experienced a tornado for the first time in their lives.
The wind was so strong that it blew away roofs and destroyed their homes.
Resident Christopher de Leon could do nothing else but pray. "Naliligo po ako....grabe po...ang lakas! Gumanito na lang po ako at nagdasal sa Diyos, bahala na po kayo."
"Grabe ang lakas! Kala ko katapusan na ng mundo!!!" said Jun Villamor.
The tornado passed as quickly and as suddenly as it hit.
Still, people like Marichu Padisal continue to fear another tornado.
"Natulala ako...natatakot po ako...baka mangyari ulit...iniisip ko ang mga anak ko," Marichu said.
With no dry food or clothes and no roof over their heads tonight, residents are at a loss on what to do next.
Barangay officials say they can spend the night in a nearby basketball court.
Shaped like a building
Charlie Chua, a resident of Barangay Immaculate Concepcion, said he spotted the tornado approaching their area around 12 noon.
“Ang laki niya… saka ang itim! Parang building yung dumarating! dala dala niya andaming basura, yero, saka puno!” he recounted.
Although the tornado lasted only for seconds, it inflicted great damage on more than 30 houses in Quezon City.
Olive Marapia, also of Barangay Immaculate Concepcion, was injured after a bicycle fell on her head.
“Sinasanggahan ko po yung dalawang anak ko, hindi ko namalayang bumagsak yung bisikleta,” she said.
The tornado toppled an old tree and several electric posts along Betty Go-Belmonte Street.
It also damaged several housed in Barangay Mariana. – With a report from Chiara Zambrano, ABS-CBN News
