MANILA, Philippines - Fire razed the chemistry pavillion of the University of the Philippines' (UP) Palma Hall in Quezon City on Wednesday night.

The city fire bureau said fire broke out at the chemistry pavillion past 11 p.m. Wednesday.

The fire reached the 5th alarm before it was put out around 1:10 a.m. Thursday.

Grace Gregorio, UP-Diliman vice-chancellor, said classes are suspended at the Palma Hall.

Fire investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire.

Superintendent Bobby Baruelo of the city fire bureau said they were told that a student left an electrical equipment plugged at the chemistry hall, which could have caused the blaze.

"Maari na may saksakang naiwan tapos nakaapekto sa chemical reaction. Iimbestigahan natin," Baruelo said.

He said it took them some time to put the fire under control because of the chemicals inside the pavillion.

Baruelo said they have asked the UP-Diliman management to allow them to inspect other buildings within the university compound to avoid the same incident. -- Report from Doland Castro, ABS-CBN News
