MANILA, Philippines (3rd UPDATE) – A police officer allegedly involved in protecting pickpockets was killed in a shootout near the bus loading bay area of SM Megamall Building A Friday night, authorities said.

The cop, identified as PO1 Leo Antiporda, was shot dead by officers of the Philippine National Police Intelligence Group (PNP-IG) in an encounter at around 8 p.m.

The 31-year-old Antiporda was rushed to the PNP General Hospital in Camp Crame but was declared dead on arrival.

He died from a gunshot in his left chest.

The cop was followed by the operatives after they reportedly received information that he was protecting criminals who victimize bus passengers along EDSA.

When Antiporda sensed that he was being followed, he allegedly confronted the PNP-IG officials and a gunfight ensued.
