MANILA, Philippines - Passengers of the Metro Rail Transit abandoned a stalled MRT coach Thursday morning after smelling smoke inside the train.

MRT duty manager Nestor delos Santos said a south-bound train stopped at around 9:52 a.m. near the Santolan station after a brake pad got stuck.

He said this causes smoke to come out “and sometimes emits a bad smell.”

Some passengers panicked and pressed the emergency buttons.

“Before the driver could tell them to calm down, the people already stepped out of the train,” he said.

This caused minor injuries. A passenger also sprained an ankle but was immediately assisted by guards and concerned citizens.

The MRT operation is now back to normal. The particular train had been moved and parked at the Shaw station.
