MANILA, Philippines (1st UPDATE) - Justice Secretary Leila de Lima on Thursday announced the removal of Magtanggol Gatdula as Director of the National Bureau of Investigation.

De Lima said President Aquino confirmed Gatdula's sacking from the NBI. She said the President will also announce Gatdula's replacement.

Gatdula's removal came after he was linked to the kidnap-extortion of a 32-year-old undocumented Japanese woman.

De Lima said the Department of Justice could release its report on the alleged kidnapping today or tomorrow.

The justice chief said NBI security and management division (SMD) head Mario Garcia tried to stop the release of the DOJ report by asking for a temporary restraining order (TRO) from the Manila regional trial court.

The report reveals that undocumented Japanese Noriyo Ohara was kidnapped by NBI agents and asked for P6 million in ransom.

De Lima said NBI personnel linked to the kidnap-extortion will be charged with criminal and administrative charges.

Rumors that Gatdula will be replaced by Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) chief Samuel Pagdilao started after Pagdilao was seen with de Lima during the 59th anniversary of CIDG.

Pagdilao said he heard reports that he is on the shortlist of possible replacements for Gatdula but said he has yet to receive any confirmation. With radio dzMM
