MANILA, Philippines - Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday said Chief Justice Renato Corona did the right thing when he spoke out to defend himself against President Benigno Aquino and his allies.

Marcos believes it was just natural for Corona to do it after being publicly attacked by the President.

"Sa palagay ko ipinagtatanggol lang niya ang sarili niya," he told reporters. "If you are attacked, if you are accused, you must defend yourself. And I think that's what the Chief Justice is doing."

However, Senators Franklin Drilon and Aquilino Pimentel III believe that Corona should have just kept quiet.

They said the proper venue for Corona to air his side is the impeachment trial, which is slated to begin in January 2012.

"I wish that the Chief Justice would stay cool, do not lose his equilibrium, and maintain the dignity of the office of the Chief Justice," Drilon said. "My advice is maybe, there can be more circumspection in these public statements."

Drilon reiterated that he won't inhibit from the impeachment proceedings despite calls for him to do so because of his recent public statements against Corona.

He said that unlike members of the judiciary, politicians like him "have more circumspection insofar as public statements are concerned."
