MANILA - Senator Ralph Recto came to the defense of his wife, Batangas Governor Vilma Santos, who was ordered by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to vacate her post for failing to comply with election expenditure rules.
In a statement, Recto said they immediately reviewed the statements of election contributions and expenditures (SOCEs) they filed and did not see any mistakes.
“If there are any mistakes, the Comelec should have informed us so that we can rectify any error, if there’s any.”
He said his wife even filed earlier than the deadline, or on June 6. “We followed all laws, rules and regulations.”
There was even a certificate of compliance dated June 6 from the Comelec Batangas, he said.
He noted the “Comelec officer of Batangas is also shocked and surprised” by the turn of events.
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes announced Thursday the names of over 400 elected officials who failed to comply with requirements in the filing of SOCEs.
Besides the actress-politician, also ordered to vacate their posts are former President and now Pampanga congresswoman Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Laguna Governor Emilio Ramon "ER" Ejercito.
