MANILA, Philippines - The impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona is not likely to begin this year even if the complaint from the House of Representatives is transmitted to the Senate this week.
Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said Congress will go on break beginning Thursday, December 15, and will only resume sessions a month after.
"Wala na kaming panahon. Siguro sa Enero na 'yon," he told reporters.
Enrile added that it is unlikely for President Aquino to call for a special session for the Senate to be able to hold an impeachment trial because it is only done for law-making purposes.
He said the Senate is ready to hold a trial, having done so before when former President Joseph Estrada was impeached.
Senators have also approved impeachment rules early this year for the trial of former Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez, which did not push through after she resigned.
