MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has denied accreditation to more than 30 party-list groups, bringing the total number of disqualified party-list groups to more than 100.
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said the poll body is set to announce the retention of one other incumbent party-list group and the inclusion of one party-list group linked to Supreme Court Associate Justice Presbitero Velasco.
Butil party, represented in the 15th Congress by Rep. Agapito Guanlao, is excluded from next year's elections.
Existing party-list group Binhi-Partido Ng Mga Magsasaka Para Sa Mga Magsasaka was also disqualified. It nominated Ryan Vincent L. Uy, Pacifico Rico C. Fajardo Jr., Nelson E. Villanueva, Victoriano N. Perez, Jr. and Rodolfo P. Torreda, Jr.
The Comelec also denied the application of Ako Bisaya, which nominated former Cebu Rep. Nerissa Ruiz; the Partido ng Manggagawa, and Melchora, which nominated Grace Ibuna, former partner of the late Congressman Iggy Arroyo.
Other notables among those cancelled are groups claiming to represent inmates, state pension fund members, transport groups, school dropouts, foreign currency dealers and anti-crime groups.
Some of the groups on the list he released to media were already announced in previous press conferences.
Brillantes said the Comelec will likely retain the accreditation of incumbent LPGMA, which is the subject of opposition, and Ang Mata'y Aalagaan, controversial for nominating the wife and 2 children of Supreme Court Associate Justice Presbitero Velasco.
The Comelec chief said 2 of the 3 Velascos have withdrawn.
Brillantes, however, clarified that the final list of those which will be denied and accredited will be released tomorrow.
Still awaiting the decision of Comelec are groups Bagong Henerasyon, Yacap and An Waray, all of whom are allied with President Aquino.
