MANILA -- Politicians commended boxing champ Manny Pacquiao for his win over American Chris Algieri in Macau on Sunday.

In a statement, Vice President Jejomar Binay said Pacquiao easily won because of his “heart and determination.”

“Algieri may have had the advantage in height and reach, but Manny overcame that with his heart and determination. He showed us that he has the true heart of a champion and once again, made us all proud to be Filipinos,” he said.

Pacquiao’s colleagues at the House of Representatives also chimed in.

Amid debates on whether he should already choose between boxing and politics, his colleagues are clearly supportive of Pacquiao.

“Manny Pacquiao is the national symbol of unity. Every time he fights the whole nation watches together, praying for his victory, the victory of the Filipino and the nation. He makes us proud to be Filipinos,” Iloilo Rep. Jerry Trenas said.

“The fight clearly refutes claims that Manny Pacquaio should now retire from boxing. He is still has a fist like steel and a speed like lightning. Once again, Manny gifted us with a very rare moment where our nation is united and free from partisanship,” he added.

Another lawmaker is hoping Pacquiao finally meets his rival, Floyd Mayweather Jr.

“The victory of Manny Pacquiao once again gave our nation so much pride and the reason to celebrate our nationhood. It also a clear statement from our boxing hero that he is still a strong fighter. I just wish that this time, Floyd Mayweather would finally agree to face him inside the ring,” Samar Rep. Mel Senen Sarmiento said.

For his part, Davao Rep. Karlo Nograles was all praises for the Filipino champ.

“He is back!! The fire is back!! Our People's Champ Rep. Manny Pacquiao has shown to the world that if you put your heart and mind into it you can accomplish anything! With this victory Manny displayed the true spirit of the Filipino - our ability to get up and rise up after a fall. Manny is now ready for Mayweather! Mabuhay ka Manny Pacquiao! Mabuhay ang Pilipino!" Nograles said.

Meanwhile, Senator Nancy Binay called Pacquiao is an inspiration.

“Isa kang inspirasyon sa ating mga kababayan. Patunay ka na kahit anumang pagsubok ang harapin, ito’y mapagtatagumpayan sa tulong ng pagtitiyaga; dedikasyon; at pananalig at pagtitiwala sa sariling kakayahan at sa Maykapal,” she said.
