Ex-CJ Andres Narvasa passes away

MANILA (4th UPDATE) – Former Supreme Court chief justice Andres Narvasa passed away on Thursday morning. He was 84.

SC spokesperson Theodore Te told reporters Narvasa passed away at 6:05 a.m.

Narvasa's remains were also cremated this morning.

Narvasa was the 19th chief justice of the Supreme Court. He served from December 8, 1991 until November 30, 1998. He was succeeded by Hilario Davide Jr.

Narvasa served as defense counsel of then President Joseph Estrada in his impeachment trial.

He also served as Dean of the Faculty of Civil Law at the University of Santo Tomas, and chairman of the Preparatory Commission for Constitutional Reforms.

Before joining the SC, CJ Narvasa was also the general counsel of the Agrava Fact-Finding Board formed to probe the killing of Ninoy Aquino, the SC PIO said.

Information from the website of Fortun Narvasa Salazar law firm, where Narvasa served as counsel, said the former chief justice was admitted to the Philippine Bar in 1951.

Narvasa took his Bachelor of Laws in UST, graduating magna cum laude. He also received Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) from UST, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, and Angeles University Foundation.

Te said Narvasa's remains were brought to the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Shrine in New Manila, Quezon City, where masses will be held every 6:00 p.m. beginning today until Sunday.

On Monday, November 4, his ashes will be brought to the Supreme Court.
