MANILA, Philippines - The lawyer of former First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo condemned the reinstatement of former First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo in the government’s watch list, saying it is “most cruel and inhuman.”
In a statement, lawyer Ferdinand Topacio said it “evinces a lack of compassion and common human decency in the leaders of the present administration.”
Arroyo was placed in the Bureau of Immigration’s watch list anew for his alleged links to widespread fraud in the 2007 elections. Topacio noted there was lack of evidence against Arroyo for his inclusion in the preliminary investigation that will start on November 3.
He defined the Aquino government as a “kakistocracy,” which means a government by the least qualified and most unprincipled.
“President Aquino must be reminded that even during Martial Law during the height of the Marcos rule which the Aquinos and their allies have consistently denounced and even at present continue to demonize, the Aquino family was allowed to leave to join Sen. Benign Aquino Jr. for medical attention in the United States,” he said.
He noted the former First Gentleman will now be prevented from discharging his obligations to former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who is seeking a travel authority for her ailments.
“It is thus most execrable for the present government to accord such treatment to the Arroyos that is worse that what they experienced during the Marcos administration,” Topacio said.
