MANILA - The ruling party Lakas-Kampi-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-Kampi-CMD) will hold a national convention on November 12 in Cebu where Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro will be officially named as the party's standard-bearer.

Lakas-Kampi-CMD vice-president for Mindanao Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri announced the holding of the convention in Cebu, which was reportedly confirmed to him by presidential political affairs adviser Gabriel Claudio.

Cebu provided the big lead that allowed President Arroyo to beat the late movie actor Fernando Poe Jr. in the 2004 presidential elections.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) recently dismissed the petition of former House Speaker and Lakas stalwart Jose de Venecia questioning the legality of the merger between the Lakas-CMD and Kampi, President Arroyo's original party in the 1998 elections.

Zubiri said Teodoro will resign as defense secretary before the national convention.

He also said nominations for the vice-presidential and senatorial posts of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD remain open.

NPC won't party with Lakas-Kampi

Meanwhile, Pangasinan Rep. Mark Cojuangco has thumbed down a proposal that the Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC) join forces with the administration's Lakas-Kampi-CMD for the 2010 elections.
Cojuangco, son of NPC chair emeritus Eduardo 'Danding' Cojuangco Jr., said the NPC has its own identity and strategy.

Cojuangco criticized Antique Governor Sally Perez for making the proposal for an alliance, saying the governor is only a new member of the NPC.

He said Perez's pronouncement was an abuse of her recent membership in NPC. -- with reports from RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News; ANC
