Kapunan surrenders over Olalia kidnap-slay

MANILA, Philippines - A former military officer tagged in the kidnapping and murder of labor leader Rolando Olalia and his driver Leonor Alay-ay in 1986 has surrendered.

Col. Eduardo "Red" Kapunan Jr.  gave himself up last Saturday to Army chief Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Bautista at Fort Bonifacio.

He is now under the Army's Custodial Management Unit.

Bautista said Kapunan initially went to the Army's 3rd Infantry Division camp in Capiz last Friday.

"He (Kapunan) said that he has a warrant of arrest and ' I intend to turn myself in'. We accepted him…Red Kapunan turned himself in to the Philippine Army, he has a warrant of arrest," Bautista said.

The court hearing the case has been informed about Kapunan's surrender, Bautista said. "We are now waiting for the court to tell us where to bring him."

"We will abide by what the court says, we will bring him to any facility set by court ,"Ge added.

Kapunan is a former leader of the Reformed the Armed Forces Movement (RAM) that tried to topple former President Corazon Aquino from power.

His classmates in the Philippine Military Academy class 1971 include Senators Panfilo Lacson and Gregorio Honasan.

Kapunan and 13 others were ordered arrested by an Antipolo City court last February. They are set to be arraigned on October 17.
