MANILA – Is Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago finally throwing her hat in the ring?

On Wednesday, Santiago posted a photo on her official Facebook account bearing the message: ''I'm not going to be coy. Society leaders have urged me to seek the presidency. I can rise to the occasion."

The post comes less than a week before the start of the filing of certificates of candidacy.

Back in July, Santiago announced that the cancer growth in her lung ''has been arrested'' and that she was considering running for president.

Santiago on several occasions hinted that she is considering running for president.

In August last year, she said she may run for president if she recovers from her lung cancer. She, however, said money for a possible campaign will be a concern.

In November of the same year, Santiago said should she become the country's president, ''I intend to appoint a cabinet, half of whom shall be from the youth sector, and half from senior citizens."

Santiago ran for president in 1992 but lost to Fidel Ramos.

In the latest Social Weather Stations survey, only 2% of the respondents said they would vote for Santiago if the elections were held during the survey period.

In the Pulse Asia survey, on the other hand, she ranked 7th in the presidential poll, getting 3%.
