Arroyo camp out to destabilize gov't with pork scam?

MANILA - The intelligence community is looking at the role of the camp of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in destabilizing the current administration by riding on the pork scam.

At this point, however, there is still no hard evidence that could be linked to this even if some of the members of the Arroyo camp were seen in the Million People March last August 26.

"We are actually looking into that angle but there is still no basis to it," a source from the intelligence community said.

"What happened appeared to be a loose coordination (among Arroyo allies). They participated on their own and observed if they can (take a lead), but it appeared they failed...They may instigate or incite (future actions)," the source said.

The source said former defense secretary and national security adviser Norberto Gonzales and several Arroyo allies were at the Manila Hotel that day although they did not proceed to Luneta, as did former PNP chief director general Avelino Razon Jr.

Former Armed Forces chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon was also quoted on television of his dismay in the pork scam.

The source noted, however, that the protest in Luneta was attended by both anti- and pro-Aquino groups.

"It’s not yet clear if one group orchestrated it. It appears to be spontaneous...The initial salvo was a multi-layered group," the official said.

He said leftists and rightist groups may join the second protest dubbed as “Edsa Tayo” on September 11.

"We are seeing a shade of politics in the forthcoming rally because leftist, rightist and political opposition groups are participating," the source said.

There is no cause for worry that they are out to destabilize the government, however, the source said.
